INSTRUCTOR:

Minimum number of students to run: 

Week One

Sewing Machine Basics

  • parts of the sewing machine (basic)
  • how to thread the machine
  • demonstrate how to do cleaning and to take it apart for untangling bobbin thread
  • stitch selector – width, length, zigzag

Sewing on scraps

  • Straight stitch
  • Zigzag
  • Reverse stitching
  • button holes

Decide whether the class wishes to make pajama bottoms or a chef’s apron.

Week Two

Hand stitching

  • threading and knotting a needle
  • Running or basting stitch
  • back stitch
  • blanket stitch
  • hemming – invisible, cross and hem stitch

Sew on a button

  • Flat – two or four holed
  • Shank
  • Handmade shank

Hem dress pants with and without a cuff


Week Three

Pattern – reading, symbols

Cut out pattern from tissue. (or perhaps trace from a master pattern)

Layout the material and pattern

Cut pattern/material

Sewing patches on Jeans (Time permitting)


Week Four

Different seam finishes

Make the pajama bottoms or chef’s apron


Week Five

Finish the sewing project

Week Six

Minor alterations

  • Take in and/or let out dress pants
  • Take in and/or let out jeans
  • Take in and/or shape dress shirt (side seams and body darts)
  • Take up shirt sleeves
ECOEQUITABLE WILL PROVIDE you with sewing equipment including a sewing machine, tools and accessories to work in-class. 

YOU NEED TO BRING: 
  • A notebook for taking notes 
  • Fabric and notions to work on your in-class project 

MATERIALS  are not Included. A list of materials will be provided by your instructor before the first class and/or on the day of your first class.

NOTE:

Students need a domestic sewing machine, iron, and basic sewing kit at home to practise and complete their garments.


PREREQUISITES: No sewing skills are necessary.
