International Women's Day

Today (and every day), we celebrate the sheer magic that women exude in various ways, especially in making the world a better place.

This day is an important reminder that we still have lots of work to do to advance gender equity in Canada and around the world. The UN recently highlighted that women worldwide hold only 64% of the legal rights of men. 

Change is accomplished not in silos or as individuals, but by people coming together, working shoulder to shoulder, collectively pushing the needle for rights, justice, and action for all women and girls.

We are fortunate and proud to have many incredible women in our ecosystem, past and present, who have given their time and passion to our mission. This is a gift that we hold dear, and inspires us to keep going.

This International Women's Day, we are reminded of our late founder, Lucile Champagne, who wove into EcoEquitable these values, of hope, to dream, to work together in solidarity, to see and realize your fullest potential and be fully yourself - all acts of bravery towards a better future.

We invite you today to read Lucile's words below, from the archives, that she wrote for a graduation speech back in early 2010s. We hope it inspires you as it does us!

"Graduation !  Changing the World !

Today is a day for dreaming !

I want to remind you of your past dreams and of all the things you still have to dream about.

What I ask of you now, is to not worry about the future.

You have dreamed of creating a different future, your wishes creating a new stage of life.  

To change your routine and move towards the unknown, you must have both vision and passion.  It is to put faith in life despite everything.

It is your story.  You have helped change the world!

Since September 2001, women from every country have seized the opportunity to join together and believe again in a future full of hope.

Since then, EcoEquitable and immigrant women have built a new world, an inclusive world, a place of cooperation where each person learns, is healed, celebrates and produces according to their creativity, their engagement and their motivation.

Your dreams have already changed my world!

Yes, without my even noticing, my world has changed significantly, in the last 10 years of my working life.  

I have a short story to tell:

In September 2001, I chose to move from the Bronson Centre to join the Heartwood House.  We were just packing our furniture in the moving truck, when a passerby offered us a sewing machine:  I told myself, I am a therapist, what am I going to do with that?  Ah-ha, maybe I will give it away.  Silence, and I sensed a hesitation: You never know… This inevitable gift, even though I tried to refuse it, found itself in the basement of Heartwood House, where two volunteers welcomed it joyously.  Spontaneously, they gathered around to check its condition, while dreaming of sewing costumes for the Grand Opening of the centre next November.  Over the next days, I heard a lot of talk about fabric, about colours, about clown costumes, and other donations accumulating and excitement among the volunteers.  The days passed, and the women found themselves in the rented space, gathering together fabric donations and dreaming of great things.  

It occurred to me that I was being called to join in the group.  The project called to me, to see all the women helping with everything, acting in solidarity.  In a promotion, they expressed it this way:

Here, we are fulfilling dreams!  

Each person brings what they are!

Here we build things together!

Here, we have a future!

For you and me and everyone who sees the future, to start a project without knowing all the details, to live tomorrow on the path, it is to contribute all your fire, your energy.

It is to be guided by people, events and the little voice inside.

From today, it is to grow with the grandeur of the universe, to celebrate the transformations that make us more human.  It is the music that comes from the heart.

GRADUATION : CHANGER LE MONDE !

 Aujourd’hui, c’est un jour pour rêver ! 

Je veux vous rappeler que vous avez rêvé dans le passé

et que vous pouvez encore rêver. 

Ce que je vous demande à partir de maintenant, 

c’est de ne pas vous inquiéter à propos de l’avenir.

 

Vous avez rêvé de bâtir un avenir différent 

et aujourd’hui, votre désir réalise une nouvelle étape. 

Pour se dépayser  et  aller vers l’inconnu,

Il faut  une grande vision et une passion solide.

C’est vraiment faire confiance à la vie malgré tout...

Et c’est votre histoire.

Vous avez contribué à changer le monde !

Depuis septembre 2001, 

des femmes de tous pays ont saisi l’opportunité de se mettre ensemble 

pour croire encore dans un avenir  plein d’espoir.  

Et depuis, à Ecoequitable, elles ont bâti un monde nouveau, 

un monde où chacune est incluse, 

un lieu où s’est établie une coopération 

où chaque personne apprend, guérit, célèbre 

et produit à partir de sa créativité, de son engagement et de sa motivation.

VOS  RÊVES  ONT  DÉJÀ CHANGÉ  MON  MONDE!

Oui, sans m’en apercevoir, mon monde a grandement changé 

dans les dix dernières années de ma vie de travail. 

J’ai une petite  histoire à vous raconter :

 En septembre 2001, je choisis de déménager du Centre Bronson pour rejoindre la Maison Heartwood House. On est à placer nos meubles dans un camion de déménagement quand  un passant nous offre une machine à coudre: ‘’ Je me dis; je suis thérapeute…et que vais-je faire avec ce meuble? Ah! je le redonnerai!’’ Silence. Et je sens une hésitation : ‘On ne sait jamais’. 

Le cadeau forcé, refusé, sans intérêt, se retrouve quand même au sous-sol de Heartwood House,  où deux bénévoles accueillent joyeusement cet inconnu. Spontanément, elles s’empressent à vérifier sa condition, tout en rêvant de confectionner des costumes pour la Grande Ouverture du Centre, en novembre prochain… Au cours des jours, j’entends parler de tissus, de couleurs, de costumes de clowns; d’autres dons s’accumulent et aiguisent le rêve des bénévoles. 

Les jours passent, et elles se retrouvent dans la pièce louée et elles s’occupent à  accueillir d’autres dons de tissus et à rêver tout haut. Voilà que cette situation me rejoint comme un appel à m’impliquer moi-même. Ce qui m’interpelle dans ce projet, c’est de voir toutes ces femmes ayant tout simplement, une action de solidarité concrète. Dans une publicité, elles s’expriment ainsi :

‘’Ici, on réalise un rêve maintenant!

Chacune apporte ce qu’elle est!

Ici, on bâtit ensemble!

Ici, on a de l’avenir!’’

Pour vous et moi et toutes les personnes qui viendront dans le futur,

PARTIR, c’est commencer un projet et ne pas savoir tous les détails 

à vivre le lendemain sur le chemin, 

C’est y mettre tout son feu, toute son énergie 

C’est se laisser conduire par les personnes, les événements, la petite voix  intérieure.

PARTIR,  c’est grandir à grandeur de l’univers, 

C’est célébrer les transformations qui nous rendent plus humains.

C’est une musique qui vient du cœur."
