About your Instructor(s):

Carroll: Carroll was first introduced to sewing by watching her mother sew to earn extra money to support the family. Carroll started sewing at the age of ten and grew up wanting to be a Fashion Designer. She attended Richard Robinson's Fashion Design School, Ottawa, Ontario, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She was an instructor at Richard Robinson and has worked in the bridal industry constructing wedding and evening dresses. Shortly after graduating she found out she was pregnant and put her dreams on hold to raise her family. She kept busy sewing for her clients from her home creating custom made clothing. In 2018, Carroll joined the team at EcoEquitable as a teaching assistant and in 2019 took over the position as interim Instructor for Sewing for Jobs Level 2 Program. In 2019 Carroll became an instructor for EcoEquitable's Public Sewing Classes, and between then and now, has taught the Sewing for Job's Level 1 Program several times including last Fall.

Coco: Hi there! My name is Coco and I immigrated to Canada when I was very young. While I was growing up, I didn't have anybody to teach me sewing, so I decided to just teach myself. Over the past three years, I have really dedicated myself to building on my previous skills and learning as much as I possibly can about sewing. My sewing journey has taken me into garment making, quilting, pattern-making, alterations, and much much more. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you and helping you make the crazy (or boring) ideas in your head a reality and helping you to avoid some of the mistakes that I had to learn about the hard way. One fun little thing I like to say is that sewing is all about creatively stabbing the fabric in a way that achieves the functional and aesthetic goals of your project. See you in class!

You will learn:

  • Intermediate sewing techniques
  • Taking measurements to make a skirt
  • How to read sewing pattern instructions
  • How to use different interfacing available and how to work with it
  • Different ways to finish seam edges, sew darts, a kick pleat and install a centred zipper
  • How to make a dress or hem a skirt
